How does it work with existing healthcare systems?

Peek Retina is intended for use within existing healthcare systems to expand the circumstances where they can acquire retinal images for the purpose of making monitoring and referral decisions. This includes enabling non-specialist staff to acquire images, when properly managed, and images to be acquired in non-traditional settings such as communities and non-ophthalmic clinics. Specialist clinicians and graders can receive images for assessment and referral decisions from a much wider range of patients and locations, increasing their reach and effectiveness while also freeing up their time from non-specialist tasks such as case finding. Images are shareable in multiple ways and into many types of system architecture and workflow.

How do I get it? How much does it cost?

You can place an order on our website. Peek Retina will cost £180 + tax + postage and package. Please note shipping will be calculated at the checkout and varies across all regions.

What’s the difference between Peek Retina Medical, Peek Retina Educational and Peek Retina Veterinary?

All products are functionally the same however local taxes and regulations are calculated based on the intended use of the product. If you are intending to use Peek Retina for medical use there are limitations on the countries we can send it to. If you are intending to use for education or veterinary purposes there are no shipping restrictions.

Can I use it to self-test my own eyes?

No. Peek Retina is intended as a device for healthcare workers, to use with their patients.

Do you need dilating drops to see the back of the eye?

Yes, in almost every case you will need to dilate the pupil. It may be possible to capture optic disc images from some eyes without dilation, but this is not an expected use case. With dilating drops the expected field of view is equivalent to current leading wide field ophthalmoscopes.

Does it work for children?

Yes, Peek Retina can be used successfully to capture retinal images from children. It can be more difficult to capture a wide field of view on small eyes. As with any examination of a child, they may not respond to your instructions in the same ways as an older person!

Can I help test it in my clinic?

We will be looking for people to give feedback on an ongoing basis to help us improve the mobile app and individual tests. If you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with us.

Can I use it in research?

If you work on behalf of a research institute please provide us with more details so we know how best to help. Please get in touch here. The team is very keen to see Peek used and tested in multiple settings and to hear about projects it is helping.

Does this work across all platforms?

Not yet. The majority of our users and potential users have Android devices, so we targeted the Android platform first and have made Peek Acuity available on the Google Play Store. We are developing Peek Acuity to work on other platforms, including iOS, and aim to launch new versions in the coming months.

Can I use it to self-test my own eyes?

No. Peek Acuity is intended for testing someone else’s vision. We may release self-test versions of other tests in future, if they prove suitable and reliable.

Does it work for children?

Yes, most reliably from the age of 6 because the child does need to understand the basic process of the test. Peek Acuity is designed to be simple and visual, so subjects do not need to be literate or have advanced verbal reasoning, so it can work for very young children. We are currently testing the app to see how young is suitable. The Peek team is currently running clinical tests for a new range of child-specific eye care applications for very young children and potentially babies. More on this soon.

Is Peek Acuity free?

For personal use, yes. For corporate use, see here or contact us.

Are there costs associated with reading or interpreting the results from Peek Acuity?

Consulting an eye health professional about the results produced by Peek Acuity may cost money. Peek Acuity does not interpret its own results, as it is simply a test to measure visual acuity, and Peek does not provide users of Peek Acuity with any medical advice based on test results.

Are the results from Peek Acuity similar to the results from a traditional eye exam?

One of our largest trials was published in JAMA Ophthalmology

The study demonstrated that the Peek Acuity smartphone test is capable of accurate and repeatable acuity measurements consistent with published data on the test-retest variability of acuities measured using 5-letter-per-line retroilluminated logMAR charts.

Additional applications to assess visual function and imaging of the eye make smartphones an attractive option for delivering ophthalmic assessment. The ability to reliably measure a change in vision or detect abnormal vision generating a jargon-free result greatly improved efficacy in the hands of minimally trained personnel. Thus ultimately leading to more people receiving timely and appropriate treatment.

Does Peek Acuity need a similar amount of time to operate as a traditional eye chart?

Peek Acuity is easier to administer than an equivalent wall chart, such as Snellen or ETDRS, and is generally quicker to complete. The algorithm that controls progress through each test is optimised for clinical accuracy, so the test will end just as soon as a reliable score has been obtained. This is usually in less than 1 minute per eye.

How long does a Peek Acuity test take?

In our studies to date, most patients have been reliably tested in less than 1 minute per eye. A patient may take longer if they have difficulty understanding the test, if their vision is affected by more complex problems, or by environmental factors such as distractions during the test – this can be an issue in rural and community settings, where Peek Acuity makes visual acuity testing possible in places a chart is impractical to use.

Does Peek Acuity record results?

No, Peek Acuity and Peek Acuity Pro do not record the result of any test and at present do not provide any functionality for recording any patient data. Results must therefore be recorded outside the app, such as manually entered in a patient’s record.
