Peek Acuity and Peek Acuity Pro are smartphone-based vision eye test apps, engineered by eye experts, that allow anyone to measure visual acuity using only their smartphone. They are designed to help screen and identify people who need further examination.

A letter “E” is shown on the screen. It changes in orientation and size, each size being a different vision level.  The patient points in the direction of the E and the tester records this response by swiping on the phone screen in the same direction the patient pointed (there is no need for the tester to look at the screen – the app works out if the answer was right or wrong). The app calculates the vision score and presents at the end of the test and links to SightSim to show what the visual world looks like for the person just tested.

Several large studies have been conducted to validate Peek Acuity compared to clinical standards. One of the largest trials was published in JAMA Ophthalmology.  Peek Acuity has also been used to support important research including work published in The Lancet Global Health.

Peek measures the success of its products and services by their impact. We believe Peek Acuity will help standardise the quality of vision screening, increasing the quality of patient experiences and services. Our innovative visual representation is a powerful tool to help explain visual impairment to patients and carers, increasing the likelihood that they seek treatment.

School Screening

Peek Acuity sight tests can be used to capture information on schoolchildren who don’t see well. The information on those children is automatically sent to a local eye care professional who can schedule visits to the school to work out the reasons for the sight problems, provide treatment (e.g. glasses, eye drops), or refer them on for specialist care. Parents of the children receive automated SMS (text) messages or voice messages in their local language notifying them of the result of the screening tests. The head teacher or contact person for the school receives an SMS list of the children in their school who require further support.
