Peek started as an idea, then became a research project at the International Centre for Eye Health at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Today, we are a growing international organisation whose team includes a TED Fellow, an ex-Google Android partnerships lead, an optical product specialist, software systems architects, clinical researchers and leaders in programme support and training.
We focus on solving problems experienced in the most underserved areas of the world and we work directly with local health experts. We listen, observe, innovate, test and then validate before we scale up, always working within local service capacity and helping to improve effectiveness through local integrated pathways. We partner with clinical services, ministries of health and education, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector. Based in London, we work all over the world.
Our team has been developing smartphone-based visual assessment tools since 2011. Our research has developed evidence that covers vision testing, ophthalmic imaging, clinical best practice, situational analysis and screening programmes for eye health services. Peek has been awarded development and implementation grants by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and Standard Chartered Bank’s Seeing is Believing initiative.
Vision – what we want: Vision and Health for Everyone
Mission – how we will achieve our vision: Create technology and health intelligence that empowers healthcare providers to deliver quality, sustainable eye and health care to everyone.
Values – how we behave and communicate:
Quality-driven Aim for excellence in all we do. We challenge the status quo, evolving our products, services and solutions as we strive for excellence.
People-focused Collaborate to increase our impact. We engage with the people we serve, our families and friends, partners and suppliers, always open to new ideas that will help us work together more effectively.
Act with integrity Communicate openly and honestly. We act to foster mutual trust, as we understand that this underpins the most successful relationships.
Dr Andrew Bastawrous, Peek Vision’s Co-Founder and CEO, says:
STATEMENT FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, ANDREW BASTAWROUS:
Several years ago my wife and I, and our young family, moved to Kenya. We hoped our research and the one hundred clinics we ran would contribute something to the millions living with unnecessary sight loss. We soon realised it would barely touch the surface and that for every place we set up a clinic were so many more with people losing their sight and with it their dignity. It is what kept me up at night. Something had to change. Up in my office, on the wall by my computer is a hand-written quote:
“Go to the people. Live with them. Learn from them. Love them. Start with what they know. Build with what they have. But with the best leaders, when the work is done, the task accomplished, the people will say ‘We have done this ourselves.”
At many levels it embodies Peek’s ethos and is a great mantra for both leadership and development. It isn’t written by a modern day hero or superstar, it is in fact 2,500 years old and written by the Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu. What we are doing is not new, we just live in an era where we have new means to do it. Central to our work is our values: being quality driven, people-focused and acting with integrity. We are a family and we work together, as all families, with our imperfections. However, at our core is our shared vision and mission and we recognise that we can only realise our vision by working with others and for others. So many people have contributed to bring us to where we are now, and now more than ever we have a responsibility to reach those who are silently waiting.
